What is a Facelift?

A facelift, at South Florida Facial Plastic Surgery, is 100 percent customized for the individual. Several surgical techniques may be employed to remove excess skin, resuspend sagging tissues, and subtly enhance facial contour. The goal is to address sagging skin, create a defined, youthful jawline, and smooth away deeply etched wrinkles and folds. Modern aesthetic technology may be used in combination with surgery to achieve outstanding outcomes.

Is it Time for a Facelift? Facelift Candidates

Every individual has a unique physiology, and the right time to undergo a facelift varies from person to person. It may be an appropriate surgery for some in their forties, and others in their fifties or sixties. Whatever your age, if you have any of the following facial issues, a facelift may be right for you:

  • Jowls
  • Lack of definition at the jawline
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Excess skin
  • Facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth and nose
  • Double chin
  • Excess skin or folds on the upper neck

What is the Facelift Procedure?

The surgical techniques employed in your facelift will involve placing incisions. The length and location of the incisions will reflect your unique condition. Older, traditional facelift surgery merely involved removing excess skin and tightening the remaining skin.

This approach was responsible for what we have all seen — a tight, unnatural look. Our approach is to employ the latest surgical techniques to create a much more natural look. When the underlying facial structure is lifted and restored to its youthful position, the result is refreshed, youthful, and looks like you — just younger!

While our facial plastic surgery specialists work their magic, you will be under general anesthesia, and will not experience any discomfort. When you awaken, your face will be bandaged and you can return home, under the care of another adult. You will feel groggy and will want to rest that day.

Your Recovery

During the early stages of your healing, you need to ensure you sleep with your head elevated, whether in a reclining chair or with a wedge pillow on your bed. You need to ensure your face is not subjected to any pressure. The dressings are usually removed when our facial plastic surgeon sees you in a follow-up appointment the day after your surgery. Initially, you will have prescription pain medication to stay comfortable. We will provide you with full aftercare instructions, and we are always available if you have questions or concerns. You will need to avoid any vigorous physical activities for a few weeks but should take gentle walks regularly, as this promotes circulation and healing. Expect some swelling and bruising, which typically peaks at day three, after which it starts to fade.

The Reveal

After several weeks, you will feel ready to reveal your refreshed look. If you are planning to attend an important event and want to look your best, plan on undergoing facelift surgery eight to ten weeks before the event. You will begin to enjoy the results much earlier, often at about three weeks, but as everyone varies in healing time, it is wise to plan for a longer recovery time. With the help of our talented facial plastic surgeons, expect compliments!

Facelift FAQ

Can a facelift look natural?

A facelift, when performed with the most advanced techniques, can achieve a look that is very natural, rejuvenated, and youthful, without the pulled, overdone look that was once associated with the procedure. At South Florida Plastic Surgery, we are focused on achieving the most natural-looking outcome possible.

Will a facelift treat the entire face?

A facelift treats the mid to lower face. For a full facial rejuvenation, you may want a facelift combined with an eyelid lift, neck lift, or brow lift. All of these questions can be discussed in a private consultation with you, in which we can evaluate your unique conditions and advise you of what is needed in your case.

How long is the recovery after a facelift?

You should feel well enough to show off your new look within about three weeks, but full recovery is achieved at about six months. Even after that time, the incision lines will continue to fade, until they are virtually invisible.
