What is the Procedure?

Eyelid surgery in Miami is a relatively simple procedure that can take one to two hours for both upper and lower eyelids. The basic steps include:

Anesthesia for your comfort, typically local and intravenous sedation.
Incisions are strategically placed within the natural structures of the eyelid region. Upper lid incisions are made within the natural crease of the eyelid. Lower eyelid incisions may be made just below the lower lash line or on the inside of the eyelid.
Tightening of muscles, repositioning or removal of fat deposits, and removal of excess skin.
Closure of incisions with sutures or surgical glue.

Rest and Relax After Eyelid Surgery in Doral, Pinecrest, Coral Gables, North Miami

Plan to take some time off and limit your activities for several days after blepharoplasty. You may have a stitch in each upper eyelid for approximately one week. Expect some swelling and bruising in the eyelids. You may experience dry eyes, mild discomfort, and irritation, which can be controlled with medication or ointment. Sleep with your head elevated for several days to minimize swelling. Your eyes will look more youthful and refreshed when the swelling subsides in a week or two after surgery.

How does aging affect the eyelids?

Skin gradually loses elasticity as it ages. Combined with the effects of gravity, this can lead to excess skin, folds, wrinkles, and bags in the eyelids.

Can eyelid surgery improve my vision?

If droopy upper eyelids are obstructing your vision, eyelid surgery can help. Excess skin can be removed from sagging upper eyelids in a blepharoplasty procedure, so they no longer interfere with sight.

Yes, blepharoplasty is often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as a brow lift, a facelift, or a nose job.

Can I drive myself home after eyelid surgery?

Arrange to have someone drive you home after eyelid surgery at one of our offices in Doral, Coral Gables, Aventura, Lighthouse Point, Margate, or North Miami. You should not drive after surgery as your vision may be blurry due to the anesthetic. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home.

Are there any dietary restrictions before or after the procedure?

Depending on the type of anesthesia, your doctor may instruct you not to eat or drink after midnight before the surgery. You can eat whatever you like after eyelid surgery. You may want to start with a liquid diet, then advance to soft foods and ultimately solids as tolerated after the anesthesia. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

How can I reduce swelling after eyelid surgery?

Keeping your head elevated for two or three days after surgery can help minimize swelling. Avoid bending over or straining. Applying ice or cold compresses to the face and eyelids can help reduce swelling.

What are the advantages of doing the upper and lower eyelids in the same surgery?

Plastic surgery procedures for the upper and lower eyelids are often combined. The benefits of doing both upper and lower lids at the same time include:

Lower cost than two separate procedures
